Ravinder Reddy
- Ravinder Reddy (b. 1956, Suryapet, Andhra Pradesh) is a celebrated Indian sculptor whose monumental, vividly painted works have made him one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Indian art. Known especially for his iconic oversized heads and figurative sculptures of women, Reddy’s practice fuses traditional Indian aesthetics with modern material experimentation and sculptural boldness. He completed his BFA and MFA in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (1975–82), followed by advanced studies including a Diploma in Sculpture from Goldsmiths College of Art, London (1983) and a ceramics course at the Royal College of Art, London (1984).
Reddy first gained international attention in the early 2000s, becoming one of the first contemporary Indian artists to make a significant impact in the United States with a notable show at Deitch Projects, New York (2001). Over a career spanning more than four decades, his work has been exhibited worldwide in solo and group exhibitions in London, Paris, New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Mumbai, and New Delhi, and he remains a potent presence in global contemporary sculpture.
His signature sculptures are often rendered in fiberglass, polyester resin, and paint, materials that allow for scale, colour saturation, and bold surface treatment. Reddy’s large-scale heads and female figures—frequently painted in vibrant reds, golds, blues, and yellows—draw inspiration from classical Indian sculpture traditions (including Gupta, Maurya, and Chola art), West African forms, Kalighat painting, and popular visual culture, creating works that simultaneously reference history and assert a contemporary aesthetic.
Reddy’s sculptures are held in major public and private collections worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), Peabody Essex Museum (USA), Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Japan), Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (USA), and Queensland Art Gallery (Australia), attesting to his global recognition and influence.
Living and working in Visakhapatnam, India, Ravinder Reddy continues to explore the expressive possibilities of form, colour, and scale, creating works that challenge conventional notions of sculpture, celebrate the feminine form with presence and power, and stand as vibrant symbols of contemporary Indian artistic innovation.
